THE ISSUE
HSE Integrated operates a fleet of
oilfield safety vehicles with aluminum
truck bodies that have a history of
coatings failures. Sections of paint
were routinely damaged or removed
during pressure washing and use. HSE
was looking for a painting solution that
would provide long-term aesthetics
and greater durability.
THE SOLUTION
To resolve this issue, HSE
Integrated contacted Quantum Group
of Companies. Quantum Coatings, part
of the Quantum Group of Companies,
manufactures and distributes solvent-
free polyurethane and polyurea fast-set
polymer systems. These zero VOC
products offer the added bonus of
minimal environmental impact which
was exactly what HSE was looking for.
The trucks have custom fabricated
aluminum bodies which house fire
fighting equipment, water tank, and
decontamination shower.
|
The aluminum truck body was brush
blasted, blown off and solvent washed.
One coat of System P-180D Primer
was applied with airless spray at a rate
of approximately 300 square feet per
gallon (5 mil). The primer was allowed
to cure for a minimum of 5 hours and a
maximum of 24 hours. P-180D is a
solvent-free two-component urethane
primer designed for use as an adhesion
primer with fast-set systems and
significantly improves adhesion and
corrosion resistance of polyurea and
polyurethane fast-set elastomers. It can
be applied by spray, brush, or roller but
in this case was applied with an airless
spray 30:1 Lemmer with a 15
thousandth tip.
Following this, a topcoat of
System LS-160 was applied using a
plural proportioner at 2500 psi and 150 F and a round pattern 01 tip. One
coat was applied at an approximate
rate of 90 sq. ft./gallon (15-20 mil).
The decontamination shower and water
tank storage areas inside the truck body
were primed with one coat Primer 180D
and top-coated with System
650D at about 125 mil to form a
waterproof liner.
System LS-160 is a 100% solids
UV stable aliphatic high-performance
polyurea elastomer used for heavy-
duty industrial applications where a
light stable coating s required. While
providing the long-term aesthetics of conventional topcoats, System LS-160
delivers the exceptional durability of
polyurea elastomers -resolving both
HSE’s requirements for long-term
aesthetics and greater durability.
System 650D was chosen because
it is a 100% solids high-performance
two-component polyurea elastomer
used for heavy-duty industrial
applications including secondary and
primary containment applications
because of its excellent resistance to a
wide range of chemicals and superior
physical properties.
Completing the initial truck took
two days to complete and HSE
Integrated was very pleased with the
final results. To date, 11 new units have
been completed. None of the trucks
showed any of the signs of failure
exhibited by the previous coating
system. There are no visible rock chips
and no cracks or peeling at the seams
between aluminum panels. The
company also plans to refinish the
existing fleet of 18 units as well as all
future aluminum trucks.
